When we dispose an item the chances are very high that it will end up in a landfill or in an incinerator. In landfills some products release toxins into the ground and start producing methane after time. When they are burned in an incinerator they can release toxins into the air. These are the better scenarios, because many people dump their waste illegally.

Just to see how big the problem is: the world generates 3.5 million tons of plastic and other solid waste a DAY!*

So we take out natural resources from Earth, which then will be pretty much wasted...the problem is that our resources are limited. Not all, but many. For example minerals and fossil fuels. They might won't run out in 20 years, or in 50 years, but eventually they will. If you have children, grandchildren or you are planning to have a family, you might be worried. And unless we come up with an idea what to do at that time, you might have a good reason to do so. Population is growing, consumption is also growing and natural resources are decreasing. Not to mention that landfills are filling up rapidly and some countries have very limited areas where they can place their waste.

Our imagination of the future is a circular economy. It will take time, creativity and innovative new ideas, but it will be worth it...for everyone.

Here are a few benefits of a circular economy:

waste is designed out (as much as possible)

products are designed to last

other products are designed to be biodegradable

waste materials can be re-used, repaired or recycled

reduces the pressure on the environment

Also circularity will have a positive impact on economic growth and it will create thousands of jobs worldwide.

Circular economy is complex. It requires a fundamental change in our system, but more importantly it requires a fundamental change in our mindset.

To finish our first post here is one of our favourite quote from Sir David:

“We are at a unique stage in our history. Never before have we had such an awareness of what we are doing to the planet, and never before have we had the power to do something about that. Surely we all have a responsibility to care for our Blue Planet. The future of humanity and indeed, all life on earth, now depends on us.”
- David Attenborough

What do you think, what can you do differently to make a change?
