This led the economy to thrive, creating millions of jobs worldwide. As a society moving forward this is great. It means that people like you and me have the possibility to become whoever we want to become, we can do whatever we want to do and if we are not happy with our job, we just go to work to a new workplace or start our own business. Anyone can become a lawyer, a dentist, a navy officer, an electrician, a courier on a motorbike (I have done that, it is great :) or even entrepreneur who works from home or...from a tropical island or from the North Pole. The list is endless, but I think you understand where I am going with this. So this development gave us individuals a huge opportunity and a huge responsibility.

We live in a time that never existed before. There were no other times in history when people had so many opportunities, comfort or freedom. I consider ourselves very lucky, specially people in the so called 'developed countries'. Even if we have a job what pays below average, we can still afford to rent a room/house, have food 2-3 times a day. If we earn a bit more, we can even buy a flight ticket to travel to an other country. Almost everyone on the World has a mobile phone, and many households have car, fridge, multiple TV-s, washing machine or computer. We have everything what a person a 100 years ago (or loads of people who live in poorer countries) couldn't even dreamed of.

But this comes with a huge responsibility.

We became a 'throwaway' society. We want everything we ordered today to be on our doorstep, not tomorrow, not today, but yesterday. If we don't like what we ordered, we just send it back and we don't even know what will happen to that product after. Once we don't need it anymore, we sell it on or give it to a charity (in better cases) but in worst cases it ends up in the bin, which goes to a landfill or to an incinerator. But eventually almost every product that has ever been produced will end up there at the end of its life.

Unless we design products which can be turned into a new product more than once - preferably many times - soon we have to dig up some 'ingredients' from our landfills. While this sounds yummy, it is not ideal.

In a circular economy almost everything stays in use as long as possible, saving huge amounts of areas turning into landfills. If the material cannot be recycled, it is meant to be biodegradable.

The circular economy comes with a circular mindset, where we don't own products anymore, we rent them. Not everything, but many things. When the manufacturer owns the product, they will be responsible for it when it breaks, not the consumer and once the product is no longer needed or reached the end of its life the manufacturer takes back the materials they need to make something new. So instead of extracting virgin raw materials from Earth, they use the materials which are already available.

Many companies do try to make changes and adapt to a circular system, because they know the environmental and financial benefits of it.

What can we do as consumers? Try to shop higher quality products, so they last longer. Research companies who are already part of the circular economy (but be mindful that they are not just greenwashing you to make themselves look better).

If you have a few minutes, I recommend you to watch this video from Dame Ellen MacArthur https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuDFMKAP2xM

I hope you found this post interesting and helpful :)

In our very first blog post we would like to share our thoughts on a circular economy and why we think that it is important.
